Trendy or Stylish Mountain Home?

There is more than one kind of “right way” to decorate a home. Now that we’ve decided not to do hand me downs from the house, how should we decorate it? We had pretty much decided against the country cabin look when we bought a home with an updated, modern look wood ceiling and white walls. Do we go with the same cool colors as our primary home? Do we go with something completely different? Do we go trendy or some neutral, but stylish design?

When we typically go away, we look for comfy, but different. We don’t stay in places like home. They have visual appeal, with focal points. We’ve chosen homes that were smaller. We’ve chosen homes that were farther away. But they were each their own experience. We decided on different and trendy.

Our design inspiration came from an unlikely place. While in Myrtle Beach for Coldwell Banker Advantage’s annual retreat, Fusion, some of our younger agents stayed at an AirBnB. I don’t know anything about the place, except it had this really cool refrigerator. It was all they could talk about, until they took some of our classes. Since all of this started with broken appliances, we started with a refrigerator.

The Samsung Bespoke Refrigerator to be exact. It has glass customizable panels, that are edgy. It has the computer panel on the right side, where we can watch tv, add items to our shopping list, write notes, play music, etc. There’s a pitcher for filtered water that auto refills, and a place to refill glasses/water bottles. It even has two sizes of ice. Color choice was made entirely by what we could get within a few weeks. But we can always change out the panels when the mood suits us. There were only two colors not backordered for 3-4 months, white and black. Apparently there are still supply chain issues. We ordered white. We’re still debating what replacement panels we will order. Since we have to get white, we have decided to wait until more of the home is done before ordering a back up set.

Now to research the trends we would choose for the home. Our Luxury Group within CB Advantage had just had a session at Furnish in Raleigh, so I already knew the colors and metals that had been declared “On Trend”. I just had to convince my husband that blue, green and gold/brass were the colors to invest in our new home. The golden/brass look making it’s way back to trendy was going to be the hard sell, I knew. My husband may have just caved because he didn’t want to go shopping with me anymore, to be honest.

While dressing the home is the fun part, we have to have the foundations first. We had the flooring that we didn’t want to change and the appliances chosen for the kitchen, but we had to figure out the cabinets. After all of these years, I’ve realized that having a neutral base where trends can be followed with interchangeable doors, accessories and wall art is the most cost effective way to go when going trendy. We decided on stock white shaker cabinets to go with the white appliances before heading up to the mountains to demo the kitchen.

Fortunately, we decided to measure one last time while we were up there after the kitchen was empty before placing the order. Apparently measuring three times is better than two and seeing the place with everything out/rearranged has benefits.

In the end we decided on Trendy and Stylish. Trendy on more easily replaceable items and stylish for the base. And the journey continues.
